My Approach to Children’s Therapy, Ages 6+
In working in therapy for children ages 6+, my approach is guided in evidenced-based practices, such as Art Therapy & Play Therapy, Cognitive-Behavioral therapy (CBT), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy. These combined approaches allow me to empower the children I work with to gain the skills they need to gain confidence and cope with challenges on a daily basis.
What is Art & Play Therapy, CBT/DBT?
Art and play therapy provide children with creative outlets to explore feelings that may be hard to verbalize, using mediums like drawing, painting, toys, and role-playing. Children often communicate their thoughts, feelings, and experiences through art and play rather than traditional forms of talk therapy. These activities create a safe, non-threatening space for children to process difficult experiences, build confidence, and improve problem-solving skills.
CBT interventions, on the other hand, focus on identifying and changing negative thought patterns that can contribute to anxiety, depression, or behavioral struggles. DBT interventions focus on managing intense emotions, cultivating acceptance and mindfulness/meditations approaches. By combining these approaches, I can address emotional challenges from multiple angles, helping children gain greater self-awareness and develop healthier coping strategies.
What Can You Expect from Children’s Therapy?
In beginning therapy with children ages 6+, I start with getting to know your child’s strengths, interests, and personality to help build rapport and a trusting relationship. This could take anywhere from1-4 sessions or more. In the beginning stages, we are often playing games or jumping into art/play therapy projects, so they can begin to develop an awareness of their thoughts, emotions, and relationships.
In the middle of therapy, children learn not only how to express and process their feelings through creative activities but also how to recognize and reframe unhelpful thoughts that may be contributing to their challenges. At this stage of therapy, we are often working on building confidence, growth mindset, positive coping skills, and communication skills. Lastly, I may use family therapy sessions to strengthen relationships between family members.
Let’s Walk through Therapy Together
You should expect to see some positive changes in your child’s behavior around 12 weeks. Some of the children I have worked with have shown improvements in emotional regulation, self-esteem, and communication skills in 1-5 sessions. However, it is important to note that these results can not be guaranteed and every child moves at their own pace. My role as your child’s therapist is to walk alongside them, so they feel supported and empowered to make positive changes in their lives!
